The premiere of X-Men Origins: Wolverine has been delayed becuase of the fears surrounding the swine flu outbreak.

It looks like the release of the long awaited prequel to the Marvel Studios film has been set back until May 14.

Its a bit of a blow to Marvel as the latest instalment of the X-Men franchise is expected to top the $100 million mark domestically during its opening three days, but Mexico could add several million dollars to its box office tally internationally.

The recent swine flu outbreak has led the country’s three largest film exhibitors Cinepolis, Cinemex and Cinemark to temporarily close many cinemas in Mexico City and surrounding areas.

“Theaters are closed, and that’s why we can’t open the film,” said Tomas Jegeus, head of international distribution for Fox. “It’s that simple. But people are more than concerned in Mexico, and it would be stupid and irresponsible to open a film.”
